On Feeble Attempts

Bike – 6 miles
Run 3.5 miles
Adventure Run Strides

I made a vlog yesterday.

It wasn’t pretty.  In fact, minus my adorable kids it was kinda boring for the first 2 minutes so I killed it.  We’ll try again next week.

One of the parts is when I discuss one of my goals for 2012:  Build a local running network.

I’m not going to lie, this one petrifies me.  I think this goal was harder for me to achieve than training for and running my first full marathon.

Ugh.

Snapshot of me ranting and raving about not wanting to go to the adventure run. Fun times.

Why building my running network?  Because the running community rocks.  It’s an amazing group of people and quite honestly I need people to challenge my running goals and provide insight sometimes instead of questioning my sanity like my non-running, non-athletic friends.

So I went to my 2nd Laguna Hills Road Runner Adventure Run.  Honestly, such good times.  But still, going in knowing NO ONE is scary.

When out making new friends, be sure to wear clothes that explain your gross condition.

For the second month in a row, I found a group of people to run with and even saw some from the month before.  It was a fabulous time.  Great runs, good camaraderie, lots of laughs, free stuff, and yes, the ever important free beer at the end.

This time I stuck around for the “after party” at Woody’s and grabbed some dinner.  And met some local runners.

I’m still not at the “have some friends to call for a long run” or “let’s train for a race together” but I’m working on it.  And hey, that’s progress.

The end of the day left me with one very important question for everyone:

If you bike, run, drink 2 beers then bike again does it still count as a brick workout?

Who Put the Mojo Killer In My Coffee?

Bike:  8 miles
Run:  2 miles
Bike:  7.5 miles
Spinny, Sucky Strides

Apparently someone put Mojo killer in my latte today.

The day started out so promising…A motivated morning, got a ton done, crazy lady dressed as a kitten in a maid uniform at Starbucks, lunch with my coworkers (for those of you who work at home you know how much to appreciate this) and I was on the crazy train to productivity.

But Dr. Seuss had it so right.

I’m sorry to say so but, sadly, it’s true
and Hang-ups can happen to you.

You can get all hung up in a prickle-ly perch.
And your gang will fly on.  You’ll be left in a Lurch.

You’ll come down from the Lurch with an unpleasant bump.
And the chances are, then, that you’ll be in a Slump.

And when you’re in a Slump, you’re not in for much fun.
Un-slumping yourself  is not easily done.

A few years ago I went through some pretty rough, tough, stuff that would take more than a bottle of wine to discuss, but the point of this:

Grief strikes at funny times.

And today was one of them.

And my babes were gone.  I needed Vanilla to come around and run me through his “crummy day” routine:  Daniel Powder’s “Bad Day” blasting while somebody gives you tea and sits with you.

After one of his “bad days” at school he put the “sad song” on the iPod and sat on the kitchen counter with a cup of tea while I cooked and we chatted about that terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

Naturally, a workout seemed like the thing to do.

So I did.  I even put on my new workout tank because if there’s anything better than a good workout it’s a good workout in new workout clothes.

And guess what?  My workout sucked.

I bricked, I sweat, I spun, I run.

(Whatever, who needs grammar when you can rhyme.)

And I didn’t feel much better.  But I did smell stinkier.

If a good brick workout can’t pull me out of my funk, then I guess this calls for dessert.

How do you pull out from your funk when a good workout won’t do?

She’s Baaa-ck

A Few Bricks last week…
No Recuerdo Strides

Yes it’s official – I’m back.  I’m tired.  And I hardly remember much of what I actually did and when.

Most of my days looked something like this:

Wake up

Hit the gym

I love awkwardly angled self-portraits in the gym. Not one foreigner looked at me strangely at all. I swear. Okay that’s a lie. They ALL did.

Grab some grub

Each morning my breakfast appetizer was a little Nuun. Sweatastic times in mega humidity

Then pretty much hit the beach, pool, swam, feel asleep, drank something fruitastic, played volleyball, snorkeled or any variation thereof.

Some of the friends I met snorkeling. While I swam in the middle of hundreds of fish, I unfortunately, did not find Nemo.

Oh yeah, and there was a wedding!

I promised pink chiffon…so there you have it folks!  Steph & Ash – uber congrats.  Love you both!

I am clearly uber photogenic.  Check out some of the snapshots from the wedding:

Classy Pants: My aunt was testing the camera and this was the best I could do.

I title this photo: Hour 8 in chiffon, boned bodice dress in 88% humidity and 85 degrees. It felt nice if you’re masochistic and all.

I have no food, a full day of work ahead of me and kids who will likely not wake up until 9 o’clock and just have to take the tardy due to the late airport pickup last night.  Sounds like a serious reality check.

Not on the agenda – a workout.  Luckily I squeezed one last good one in yesterday morning because the ol’ schedule just won’t allow today.  Plus, I’ve missed my kids like peanut butter misses jelly.  So I want to spend as much time as possible making up for all the cuddles and smiles I missed last week for every minute possible after school.

From the late bedtime, I’m guessing I’ll get to make up for all the tears and whining I missed last week too.

What’d I miss last week?  Anything exciting?  Races, injury recoveries, etc?
