Freezing Cold Strides

On Sunday I woke up and opted to sneak in a few miles early in the morning.  I was up in LA and only had a pair of running shorts packed, not pants.  You can imagine how happy I was to see this on the thermometer.

If there was ever a WTF moment, this was one of them….

I know, I know…my inner Chicagoan is ashamed that the 43 in November was considered cold, but I seriously contemplated going back to the heated house instead of busting out a few miles.

Irregardless of the cold, I pushed on through and even broke a little tiny bit of sweat at the end in my elbow pit proving it wasn’t THAT cold after all.  Bummer on the wasted theatrics.

Sunday evening I had to hit the road (actually the air) for work and headed up to Oakland for two days.  I super miss my babes but lucky for me there’s an app for that.

If you can’t be there for the real tuck in, the FaceTime tuck in is not a shabby second.  The best part is Chocolate lurking in the shadows so as to only be identified by his teeth.  Kudos to him for coming up with the ninja tuck in.  Vanilla stuck with coy snuggle and Strawberry channeled his inner hill billy sporting his gap toothed smile for bed.

As far as hitting the actual pavement this week, I’ve decided to take a few days off from running.  *gasp*  *thrash*  *shock*  My legs are still a little creaky & squeaky and I’m noticing some tweakiness and pulls in places I don’t like.  Since the name of the game is stay injury free until Boston, I opted to take 5 days off of running since I have two big, hilly challenging races this weekend.

Instead of lacing up the ol’ running shoes, I’ll just hit the bike, elliptical, etc. for a few days. I’m probably going to hit up Dr. Scott for an ART session at some point before the races to ensure things are nice and loose and keep the ol’ tendonitis from flaring up.   Not my favorite choice ever, but worth it to keep the legs fresh and uninjured.

Vacay Strides

I’m not going to lie…I’m feeling a little lost.  You see, I’m on a vacation.

Without my kids.

And I don’t have a house to clean.

No bills to pay.

No laundry to do.

No errands to run.

Just a vacation.

And as I’ve said before – I don’t exactly sit well.  It’s a little unnerving for me to just BE.  I try really, really hard.  I do yoga since it’s a slower activity, but it’s hard to focus because I always end up thinking of the gazillion point 2 things I should be doing.

Since I was a kid, sitting has never been in my nature.  Honestly, sitting makes me a little crabby.

Yesterday, I got a good reminder of this.  I woke up and got myself a brick workout (bike, run, bike), and even the road signs were screaming at me to slow down.  <<Reduzca Velocidad>> they screamed in black and yellow.

But don’t worry, Mother Nature was giving me a run for my money.  If I even wanted to run fast in my mind, the 88 degree morning with 88% humidity was going to ensure that I wasn’t going to far that fast.  Congratulations world, you won that one.

I resisted the sitting with kayaking, volleyball, swim contests (clearly I’m a grown up), and accidental water aerobics.

My cousin and I were just floating in the ocean and suddenly everyone around us was participating in water aerobics.  This is clearly a Cross Fit sanctioned class that will be coming to a gym near you because it included incredible moves like:  running in water, doing the chicken dance and clapping.  My friends, you will never be the same after a class like this.

And if that weren’t enough, my friend Brandon and I decided to climb the palm trees and hunt down some coconut water to rehydrate from today’s festivities.

Actually the resort provided the drinks and we just staged the whole coconut hunt.  Turns out 88 degree coconut water is not very refreshing.  We opted to put those down and celebrate our volleyball loss (can you believe we threw the game to end it faster?!?! The nerve!) with a cerveza instead.

PS – Brandon, if you read this…lo ciento.  Sorry for posting our adventure to the internets world, but it was too fun.

Which leads me to today…I’m tired.  So very tired.  And sore…very, very sore…

And so I will Redusca Velocidad and try to just enjoy a day of rest.  No running, no biking, but likely a bunch of swimming.

This morning it was time to tie the ol’ shoelaces and open it up since my marathon last weekend. Yes, I actually made it the full week of rest from running!  Yay!

No.  I didn’t have much of a choice as life has been so crazy busy this past week.

Truth be told, I was kind of grateful because my body probably needed it.  And with the tricky hip issue still nagging a bit I knew I needed extra time.

On Friday I suited up to go run, and then….got smart.

The kids were tired.  My body probably needed that last bit of rest.  And I had absentmindedly promised pizza night (a 3 hour commitment to sticking around the house) earlier in the week.

So I rested like a rock star.

We put on our dancing shoes!

Have I mentioned Chocolate is a my little Ham Bone?  My camera was being wonky so the pics are fuzzy, but he found my “work shoes” and busted out his moves.  Sadly, he probably did better in them than I do trying to walk into conference rooms.

While it looks like the Macarena was happening, this was actually the two of us singing Taylor Swift songs to each other.  And I have sufficient evidence that I have zero posture when dancing.

We feasted.

So good.  So naughty.  I love me some skillet pizza.  I literally go through about 3 pounds of tomatoes to make it.  Unfortunately it wasn’t my best batch.  Luckily the boys don’t care too much.

We embraced our wild side with a monster cuddle sesh…

We then got really ca-ray-zee and finished our wild night by watching a documentary about nature’s crazy little life cycle between sharks, turtles and birds.
